Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Representative Cindy Axne (IA-03) joined a group of bipartisan colleagues in introducing a Resolution to establish March 2nd as national "Gold Star Families Remembrance Day." The bipartisan resolution would honor and recognize the sacrifices made by the families of members and veterans of the Armed Forces of the United States who gave their lives to defend freedom and protect America.

"I am proud to support this resolution to recognize and honor the families of service members who gave their lives to protect the freedom all Americans cherish," said Rep. Axne. "Gold Star Remembrance Day ensures their sacrifice and the sacrifices of their families will never be forgotten. On March 2nd, I encourage all Americans to celebrate these heroes as we strive to serve our own communities."

On March 2, 1929, President Calvin Coolidge signed into law an Act of Congress that approved and funded the first pilgrimage for mothers and widows to the overseas graves of soldiers, sailors, and Marines who died during World War I. This law came about following a sustained campaign undertaken by "Gold Star" families to pressure Congress to give them the opportunity to honor the sacrifices of their loved ones who gave their lives for their country.

In recognition of these efforts almost 90 years ago and to ensure that the sacrifices of the families of the fallen members and veterans of the Armed Forces of the United States are never forgotten, Congresswoman Axne joined a bipartisan Resolution to establish "Gold Star Families Remembrance Day."

The Resolution would also encourage the people of the United States to observe "Gold Star Families Remembrance Day" by performing acts of service and good will in their communities, and celebrating the lives of those who made the ultimate sacrifice so that others could continue to enjoy life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
